FILIPPO GANNA
For 24-year old Filippo Ganna, the main goal of the 2021 season is a strong performance at the Tokyo Summer Olympics. With that objective rapidly approaching, we caught up with the Italian powerhouse on a sunny afternoon at the Italian headquarters to hear about his goals for the year, how he got into cycling, his maximum power, working with Castelli’s Speed Research Unit, wind-tunnel testing, and more.
Filippo Ganna enjoyed the best season of his career in 2020. The Italian clinched gold in the men's individual pursuit on the track in February, producing a world record time of 4min 1.934sec, winning the title for the fourth time in his career. It was unquestionably a dominant performance and an incredible result, but it ended up being just the start of what would become an entire season to remember.
Ganna's success continued after the COVID-enforced break with victory on home roads, taking the men's time trial world title in Imola before going on to win four stages at the rescheduled Giro d'Italia, including all three time trials and a solo road stage win on a mountainous fifth stage.
The triumph in Imola saw him become only the second male cyclist after Chris Boardman to win the time trial world title in the same year as earning the individual pursuit world title on the track. Needless to say, we're looking forward to the many races and stages ahead for Ganna, and to what he'll add to his already impressive palmarès.
