THE DREAMER

While racing the Vuelta a España last Fall, Cam Wurf would join his Ineos Grenadiers teammates for their rest day shake out rides. We’re all familiar with the importance these play as riders transition from one week of hard racing into another. But then Cam would do something no other World Tour rider in their right mind would do – he would go for a run.

For as long as I can remember…while doing a sport, I’ve always been thinking about doing another sport.

Unorthodox, perhaps, if you are just a World Tour racer, but Cam is balancing careers as both a professional triathlete and a professional cyclist and, even so, he regularly contemplates what he should try next. And with a self-belief that anything is possible, and a work ethic and talent to back it up, why not?
Before we go any further, perhaps we should rewind just a bit. As an active and imaginative Tasmanian, Cam grew up loving sport. After some early successes in rowing, Cam went on to become Australian National Champion, U23 World Champion, and rowed for Australia in Athens at the 2004 Olympic Games.

Growing up, my goals were to compete at the highest level of sport. I didn’t even know what sport because my heroes were in every sport.

Not wanting to be defined only as a rower, Cam decided to ‘get into’ cycling. Fast forward a few years – and a few Grand Tours later – Cam had made it to the highest level of our sport, the World Tour.

The underlying thing for me is that I’ve always wanted to be just a great athlete and not pigeonholed into one sport, and in my mind, an athlete can do anything.

Not sure cycling was exactly right for him, either, Cam turned his attention to Ironman, where he won a number of professional races and set an almost equal number of bike course records. While doing so he continued to train with a handful of buddies on the road; buddies who happen to have won the Tour de France, the Giro d ’Italia, and a couple other races you might be familiar with. His strength in training caught the attention of team management at Ineos Grenadiers, and Cam joined the team as a cyclist and triathlete in 2020.

Right now, I finally feel like an athlete. I’m doing something a bit different, where I’m doing two sports at the very highest level, and that really motivates me to be the very best I can possibly be.

World Champion and Olympic rower, then World Tour Cyclist, then Ironman, then World Tour cyclist and Ironman. The only thing left for Cam is what’s next? We are very much looking forward to finding out.

Sport is my life, and has been, for as long as I can remember, and my dream is that it will be for as long as I can see into the future.
