WINTER CYCLING CLOTHING

Protection, Breathability, and Comfort for Cold-Weather Riding

01
01

HOW TO DRESS FOR WINTER CYCLING

There is no single winter cycling kit that works for every ride. The right combination depends mainly on temperature, weather, ride intensity, and your personal sensitivity to the cold.

Consider the Temperature

As temperatures fall, additional insulation becomes more important. A winter kit can combine a thermal base layer, insulated jacket, winter tights, gloves, shoe covers, and protection for the head and neck.

The temperature range shown for each Castelli product is a useful reference, but it should always be considered together with ride intensity and the other layers being worn.

Match Your Clothing to the Intensity

A high-intensity ride generates more heat and moisture than an easier endurance ride. In these conditions, breathability and controlled airflow can be as important as insulation.

Too much insulation can cause moisture to build up inside your clothing, making it harder to stay warm when the pace drops or the road turns downhill.

Prepare for Wind and Wet Conditions

Wind increases heat loss, especially on descents and exposed roads. Wet conditions may come from rain, road spray, or both.

Some Castelli garments are designed for light rain or wet roads, while others provide a higher level of waterproof protection. Always check the protection rating of the individual product.

MILD WINTER & TRANSITION CONDITIONS

For milder winter days and changing temperatures, lightweight wind protection can be more appropriate than a fully insulated winter jacket.

COOL WEATHER, HIGH INTENSITY

When the temperature is cool but the pace stays high, breathability becomes a priority. Your clothing should provide enough protection from wind and changing conditions without trapping excessive heat.

VARIABLE WINTER CONDITIONS

Some winter rides begin cold, warm up under effort, and turn colder again on descents or exposed roads. In these situations, versatility matters more than maximum insulation.

BUILDING YOUR WINTER LAYERING SYSTEM

A winter cycling kit is built around different layers, each with a specific role. The right combination depends on temperature, riding intensity, and weather conditions.

Slide image

BASE LAYER

The base layer sits next to the skin and helps manage moisture while providing the level of insulation required for the conditions.

For colder rides, Castelli offers options such as Flanders 2 and Merino Seamless. For cool conditions, Core Seamless and Medio provide lighter levels of insulation.

Slide image

Additional Insulation

When more warmth is required, an additional layer can be worn between the base layer and jacket.

The Cold Days 2nd Layer uses Polartec® Alpha® 90 active insulation to add warmth while maintaining breathability and moisture management.

Slide image

Outer Layer

The outer layer provides the main protection from wind and weather. Choose it according to temperature, riding intensity, and the conditions you expect to encounter.

The same principle applies to tights, gloves, shoe covers, and accessories: select the level of insulation and protection according to the ride rather than relying on one fixed winter setup.

Slide image

PROTECT YOUR HANDS, FEET, HEAD, AND NECK

Hands, feet, head, and neck are particularly exposed during winter riding, so the level of protection should match the expected temperature and weather.

The Castelli winter range includes gloves developed for extreme cold, wet weather, and higher-intensity riding, together with winter shoe covers, caps, skull caps, headbands, neck warmers, and balaclavas.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What should I wear for winter cycling?

A winter cycling kit typically includes a base layer, protective jacket, thermal tights, gloves, and shoe covers. Head and neck protection may also be useful in colder or windier conditions. Choose the combination according to temperature, ride intensity, wind, and rain.

How should I choose a winter cycling jacket?

Consider temperature, ride intensity, and weather protection. More insulation is useful for colder rides, while high-intensity riding requires greater breathability. Also check whether the jacket is designed for dry conditions, light rain, wet roads, or stronger weather protection.

What should I wear under a winter cycling jacket?

In cool conditions, a light or mid-weight base layer may be sufficient. In colder conditions, use a warmer base layer or add a breathable second insulating layer depending on the jacket and expected temperature.

How can I avoid overheating when cycling in winter?

Choose clothing according to ride intensity, not only outside temperature. High-intensity riding generates more heat and moisture, so lighter insulation and greater breathability may be more appropriate.

Are winter cycling clothes waterproof?

Not all winter cycling clothing is fully waterproof. Some products are designed for light rain or wet roads, while others provide stronger waterproof protection. Always check the individual product rating.
